The Super-8 stage of the T-20 World Cup is starting from today. On June 18, 40 matches of the group stage ended, in which only 3 times the score was more than 200, but 12 times the teams were all out on a score less than 100.
Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi hit as many sixes as Indian captain Rohit Sharma. There are no Indian players included in the top-10 batsmen and bowlers of the group stage. Despite this, India remained unbeaten in the group stage. Only 3 teams could win all their group matches. Let us know what was the trend of the group stage…
Low-scoring matches in America, 3 remained inconclusive
16 matches of the group stage were played in 3 cities of America. Of these, 9 matches were won by the teams chasing and 3 matches batting first. One match was tied, while 3 matches remained inconclusive due to rain. Not even once was a score of 200 scored, but 12 times the teams could score less than 120 runs. In these also the score was less than 100 twice. There were definitely low-scoring matches in America, but most of them were closely contested.
West Indies scored less than 100 10 times
24 group matches were played on 6 grounds in West Indies. The teams batting first in 12 and bowling first won in 10. Here also one match was tied, but due to rain only one match remained inconclusive.
3 times teams scored more than 200, while 10 times teams were all out on scores less than 100. The Ugandan team could not touch the score of 100 runs in any match, their highest score was 78 runs, which they made against Papua New Guinea.
No Indian in top-15 run scorers
In the group stage, 16 players scored more than 100 runs, but not a single Indian was among them. Rishabh Pant was the team’s top run scorer with 96 runs. Whereas Babar Azam of Pakistan team, who was eliminated in the first round, scored 122 runs and Mohammad Rizwan scored 110 runs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan remained on top by scoring 167 runs.
not a single century was scored
26 half-centuries were scored in the group stage, but not a single player could score a century. From India, only Suryakumar Yadav could score 50 runs and Rohit Sharma could score 52 runs. Apart from these, no Indian player scored a fifty in 3 matches. Nicholas Pooran of West Indies scored 98 runs against Afghanistan in the last group match, this is the highest score till date.
Shaheen hit equal number of sixes as Rohit
In the group stage, 16 players hit 5 or more sixes, but there is no name of any Indian player among them. Captain Rohit Sharma from India hit maximum 4 sixes, after him Rishabh Pant could hit 3 sixes. Pakistan bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi also hit 4 sixes equal to Rohit. America’s Aaron Johns and West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran remained on top with 13 sixes each.
There is no Indian even in the top 10 wicket takers
In the group stage, 8 players took 8 or more wickets, and no Indian was included in these. Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh are India’s top bowlers with 7 wickets each, but due to poor economy, Hardik’s rank among the top wicket takers is 12th and Arshdeep’s is 14th. Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqui took the maximum of 12 wickets.
2 bowlers took 5 wickets in the innings
Arshdeep Singh from India took 4 wickets for just 7 runs against America. This was the best bowling in an innings by any Indian in the history of T20 World Cup. In the tournament only 2 bowlers could take 5 wickets in an innings. Fazalhaq Farooqui of Afghanistan and Akil Hussain of West Indies achieved this feat, both took 5 wickets each against Uganda.
Highest score made in the last match
The group stage was very low-scoring, with scores of more than 180 scored only 8 times in 80 innings, out of which 200 plus scores were scored only 3 times. The third 200 plus score was made by West Indies against Afghanistan in the last group match, the team scored 218 runs, this is the highest score till date. Apart from them, only the teams of Australia and Sri Lanka could score 200 plus scores.
Low-scoring match in America, but lowest score made in West Indies
The pitch at America’s New York Stadium came under criticism for providing support to the bowlers and uneven bounce. There the scores of 113 and 119 runs were defended. Whereas in 26 innings played in America, teams could score 150 plus only 4 times. Despite this, the lowest score here was 77 runs, which Sri Lanka made in the very first match against South Africa.
On the other hand, West Indies scored 180 plus scores 6 times out of 8, but the 5 lowest scores of the tournament were also scored there. The Ugandan team could score only 39 runs against the West Indies, which was equal to the record for the smallest score in the T20 World Cup. Earlier in 2014, Netherlands team could also score only 39 runs against Sri Lanka. This time Uganda scored the 3 smallest scores out of the top-5 of the tournament.

Apart from these, India also remained unbeaten from Group-A. However, the team could win only 3 matches, one of which remained inconclusive due to rain.
Afghanistan and Bangladesh also won 3 matches each, but they also had to lose 1 match each. All 6 teams that won 3 plus matches made it to the Super-8 round. Whereas America and England got the ticket for the next round with 2-2 wins. America entered the Super-8 stage due to an inconclusive match and England due to better run rate.
Oman-PNG lost all the matches
7 teams lost 3 or more matches in the group stage, none got entry into the Super-8. In these too, Oman from Group-B and Papua New Guinea from Group-C lost all four of their group matches. Ireland and Nepal also did not get any win, but each of their matches remained inconclusive, due to which they got one point each.
Uganda, Namibia and Netherlands also lost 3-3 matches, but also got 1-1 win. Whereas the teams of Pakistan, Scotland and New Zealand could not cross the group stage even after winning 2 matches each.
Fast bowlers got 64% wickets
