The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words. Citius, Altius, and Fortius. These mean Faster, Higher and Stronger, i.e. faster, higher and stronger.

If we look at the history of the Olympics, only those countries are able to perform well in it, which are super powers economically, strategically and in defense.

After all, what is the connection between being a super power and being a medal topper in the Olympics? Know in 5 points…

1. Super Power in Modern Olympics

  • The Modern Olympic Games have been taking place since 1896. Since then the world saw countries like America, Soviet Union, Britain, China, France, Germany, Italy and Japan as superpowers.
  • If we look at the top-10 of the Olympic medal tally, the dominance of these countries is visible. After the Second World War, the two biggest super powers America and the Soviet Union emerged, these countries are also in the top-2 positions in the Olympics.
  • Before these two, Britain and France, which were superpowers and representatives of colonialism, are also in the top-5. Germany and Italy, who were allies in the Second World War, are also in the top-10.

2. Big expenditure on sports

  • America does not provide any funding to its Olympic Association, but about Rs 20 thousand crores is spent on American athletes for every Olympics through private means.
  • Every year 1.5 billion dollars (about Rs 11 thousand crores) is spent in Britain for sports infrastructure and training.
  • Expenditure figures from China and Russia are not available. It is believed that China is spending Rs 18-20 thousand crore in every 4-year cycle on preparing players for the Olympics.

3. Sports infrastructure
Almost every big city in countries like America and China has excellent sports infrastructure. These include international quality stadiums, equipment, high performance centre, biomechanics center etc.

4. World Class Training and Coaching

  • In super power nations, players are prepared by understanding the science of every sport. For this, Sports University and Sports Research Center have been created.
  • In America, players are selected at school level and college level and they are given every training and facility for the game.
  • In China and Russia, children are prepared for sports at a very early age. Strict training is given. This includes physical as well as mental training.

5. The motive of super power behind becoming Olympic medal topper

  • Proving yourself powerful without fighting: Super power means strongest, highest height and fastest. In the Olympics, we get a platform to prove these three things through sports. A super power can prove itself powerful without fighting a war.
  • To improve economy, system, technology: By achieving top position in the Super Power Olympics, they can tell the world that their system, economy and technology are better. America and the Soviet Union did this. Now China is on the same path.
  • Winning medals increases public confidence: No war in Olympics. But here the athletes of the super power nation face players from all over the world. Winning medals reassures the public that the government and the system are good. Confidence increases.
