Indian badminton players Tulsimati Murugesan and Manisha Ramadoss performed wonders in the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday. Both won medals in the women’s singles SU5 event. While Tulsimati won silver, Manisha got bronze. 19 year old Manisha has created history. She has become the first Indian female badminton player to win a medal in the Paralympics. She won the bronze by defeating Denmark’s Katherine Rosengren 21-12 21-8. India’s total medal tally has reached 11.
On the other hand, Tulsimati had to face defeat against defending champion Yang Qiu Xia of China 17-21 10-21 in the final. Tulsimati had defeated Manisha in the semi-finals. However, 22-year-old Tulsimati failed to make a mark in the gold medal match. The SU5 category is for players who have upper limb disorders. It can be in the player’s hand or in the other hand. Before these two medals in Paris Paralympics, Nitish Kumar gave India its first badminton gold of the current Games in SL3 category.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Tulsimati and Manisha on winning the medal. PM Modi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “Manisha Ramdas performed brilliantly to win the bronze medal in the women’s badminton SU5 event at the Paralympics. His dedication and perseverance have led to this incredible achievement. Congratulations to Manisha.” After this, the Prime Minister wrote, ”It is a matter of great pride for Tulsimati to win silver in the Paralympics. His success will inspire many youth. His dedication towards sports is commendable. Congratulations to him.
