Sri Lankan head coach Chris Silverwood has resigned from the post of head coach. Silverwood was in the post from April 2022. In April, SLC had extended his tenure till the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Former captain Mahela Jayawardene has also left the post of consultant coach on Wednesday. The Sri Lankan team, captained by Wanindu Hasaranga, was eliminated from the first round of the T20 World Cup 2024. It lost to Bangladesh and South Africa.

I am leaving with many good memories – Silverwood
Silverwood, who has played international cricket for England, said in a statement, ‘Being an international coach means being away from loved ones for a long time. After consulting my family, it is with a heavy heart that I am taking the decision to return home and spend time with my family. It has been a matter of pride for me to be a part of Sri Lankan cricket. I am leaving with a lot of good memories.

Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 under Silverwood coaching.
Under Silverwood’s tenure as coach, Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and made it to the final of the 2023 ODI Asia Cup during his tenure. However, during this period, Sri Lanka has also performed disappointingly in the World Cup twice. They finished ninth in last year’s ODI World Cup and hence failed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The team was out of the current T-20 World Cup even before the first round.
