About 6 thousand years ago, the Indus Valley Civilization was developing in India. People were building permanent homes and sewage systems around the same time that Egyptians began betting on sports. When the Ancient Olympics started 2800 years ago, betting on sports was quite common. Talking about cricket, 360 years ago in 1664, the Parliament of England had made a law on betting.
However, despite hundreds of laws being made in many countries of the world since then, betting on sports continues unabated.
Now the game of cricket is trying to establish itself in America, the world’s biggest superpower. America will host the 9th T20 World Cup starting from June 2. In such a situation, it would be interesting to know what is the condition of betting there? Is it legal in America? How different is America’s betting ecosystem from India? Know the answers to all the questions further.
Sports betting became legal in America in 2018
Like many countries, sports betting in America was not regulated for many years. In 1992, sports betting was banned in all US states under federal law. However, in 2018, the Supreme Court there removed this ban. The logic was that if this game of money is going on despite the ban then why should it not be recognized. Currently, sports betting is legal in 38 out of 50 US states.
Americans made sports betting worth Rs 10 lakh crore in 2023
After getting recognition from the Supreme Court in 2018, sports betting spread like wildfire in America. According to the American Gaming Association, in 2023, people in America made sports betting worth $ 119.84 billion i.e. about Rs 10 lakh crore. This amount is 27.5% more than that of 2022.
Due to people’s increasing interest in betting, the revenue of American betting companies is also increasing year by year. In 2023, American betting companies generated revenue of 10.92 billion dollars i.e. about 90 thousand crore rupees.
American football is the most popular sport for betting
The most favorite sport of American people for sports betting is American football. Out of all the people who do sports betting there, 61% of them have definitely bet in the franchise league of this sport, NFL. After this comes basketball and baseball. You can see how much interest American bettors have in each sport in the graphics below.
How sports betting works
Let us understand with an example of a cricket match. Suppose a match is going on between India and Pakistan. The betting rate is +7000 rupees if India wins and +3000 rupees if Pakistan wins. That means if you bet 1000 rupees on India’s victory and the team wins, you will get 7000 rupees. Similarly, if you bet 1000 rupees on Pakistan’s victory and the team wins, you will get 3000 rupees.
Overall, taking a risk by betting your money on the victory or defeat of a sports team. Because if you bet 1000 thousand rupees on India and Pakistan wins then you will not get any money. Same thing will happen if Pakistan loses.
Bets are not only placed on the results of the teams before the match, they are also placed on the overall performance of the players or the performance of any over during the match. That is, betting is also done on how many runs a player will score or take wickets in the match.
Betting is not legal in India
Offline betting is completely banned in India, but online betting has not been regulated yet. For this reason, many foreign companies take advantage of the lack of legislation to provide sports betting options for Indians on the internet.
How different is sports betting in America from India?
Sports betting in India and America on the internet is similar. However, no company in India has permission to start betting. In the US, both online and offline betting is legal in most states.
Do fantasy games also come under the scope of betting?
No, fantasy games do not come under the scope of betting. On this matter, in 2020, Rajasthan High Court ruled that fantasy app is a game of skill and judgment of the user. In this, money is invested based on the statistics of the players and the condition of the ground. That is why it cannot be counted in betting.
After the decision of the High Court, the business of fantasy gaming in India grew rapidly. For this reason, many apps like Dream-11, My-11 Circle, MyTeam-11, MPL, Batting and HalaPlay have entered the sports fantasy market. All the apps are also growing rapidly.
Are betting and fixing the same thing?
No, betting and fixing are two different things. In sports betting, money is placed on the outcome of a match or the performance of players during or before the match. In this the user is not aware of the result. To avoid this, some big bookies influence the players and pay them to perform as per their wish in the match.
If a player changes his performance by taking money to support the bookie, then it is counted under the scope of fixing. Fixing is illegal throughout the world.
In 2013, Rajasthan Royals’ Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan were also banned by BCCI for fixing in IPL. Pakistan’s Mohammad Aamir and Salman Butt have faced ban in international cricket. After the ban ends, Aamir will now also be seen playing for Pakistan in the T-20 World Cup.
