Online food delivery company Zomato is going to buy the movie ticketing service and event business of fintech firm Paytm. According to media reports, the deal between the two is in the final stage. For this deal, Zomato will have to pay Rs 1,500 crore to Paytm.
Through this deal with Paytm, Zomato wants to meet consumer demand in categories like food and grocery as well as entertainment. If the deal is finalized, it will be the second biggest buyout for Zomato. Earlier in 2022, the company had taken over quick commerce platform Blinkit for Rs 4,447 crore.
Paytm Movie and Paytm Insider will merge
According to a person associated with the matter, for this deal, Paytm Movie and Paytm Insider will be merged to form one unit. Zomato has been interested in this segment for a long time, so this deal makes sense.
Online ticketing and event platform launched in 2017
Paytm’s parent company One97 Communications had purchased event management company Only Much Louder (OML)-backed online ticketing and event platform Insider.in in 2017 for Rs 35 crore.
Zomato’s profit of Rs 175 crore in the fourth quarter
Zomato had registered a profit of Rs 175 crore in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24. In the same quarter a year ago i.e. Q4FY23, Zomato had suffered a loss of Rs 188 crore. This is the fourth consecutive quarter when the company’s earnings remained in the green mark i.e. profit.
Whereas, if we talk about the entire financial year, the company registered a consolidated profit of Rs 351 crore in 2024. The company collected revenue of Rs 12,114 crore in a year. In FY 2023, Zomato had a loss of Rs 971 crore and revenue was Rs 7,079 crore.
