Disqualified due to increase in weight
Let us tell you that Vinesh Phogat had wrestled in the 50 kg weight category in the Olympics. She reached the finals by defeating 3 wrestlers including Japan’s Olympic champion in one day. However, the next day before the final match, his weight turned out to be 100 grams more. Due to which he was declared ineligible.
On the other hand, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha said, “Weight management is the responsibility of the players and coaches. Especially in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo. In these, the responsibility of weight management of the athletes lies with each athlete and his coach, and not with the Chief Medical Officer appointed by IOA, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.
Vinesh was seen carrying a bag in the Olympic Village of Paris.
These arguments were also put forward in favor of Vinesh
In the sports court, it was said in favor of Vinesh that 100 grams of weight is very less. It is not more than 0.1% to 0.2% of the athlete’s weight. It can also easily increase due to the swelling of the human body in the summer season because due to the heat, more water gets accumulated in the body due to the human need to survive.
Apart from this, Vinesh had to compete in 3 competitions in a single day. During this time, he also had to eat to maintain energy.
Apart from this, the Indian side said that due to the distance between the sports village and the arena of the Olympic Games and the tight schedule of the fight on the first day, Vinesh did not get enough time to lose weight. Vinesh’s weight had reached 52.7 kg after wrestling 3 times on the first day.
The Indian side also said that Vinesh’s weight gain of 100 grams would not have given her any advantage over other wrestlers. This was simply the result of a necessary recovery process. After fighting 3 consecutive matches in a day, his body also needed diet.
The Indian side also argued that there is no fraud or misappropriation in Vinesh Phogat’s case. Nor is there any issue like doping.
Vinesh should not be deprived of the silver medal despite her hard work because she fought well in all the first matches and was disqualified in the final.
