Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that the intention of the Central Government has always been to bring petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST and now the states have to come together and decide its rate. He said that former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has already made a provision to include petrol and diesel in the GST law. Now all the states have to do is come together and discuss to decide the rate.

Let us tell you that when GST was implemented on July 1, 2017, more than a dozen central and state charges were included in it. However, it was decided that five commodities – crude oil, natural gas, petrol, diesel and aviation fuel (ATF) – will be taxed later under the GST law.

What did the Finance Minister say?

Nirmala Sitharaman said that while implementing GST, the intention of the Central Government was to bring petrol and diesel under GST after some time. He said, “Provision to bring it in GST has already been made. Now the only decision that has to be taken is that the states agree in the GST Council and then decide what rate they will be ready for.” Sitharaman said after the 53rd meeting of the GST Council that once this decision is taken, it will be implemented in the Act. Will be included.

Notice to less than 2 percent taxpayers

Along with this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that tax notices have been sent to less than two percent of the total 58.62 lakh taxpayers under the Central GST administration. He said the government intends to make life easier for GST taxpayers by reducing compliance requirements. Notices have been sent by Central GST to only 1.96 percent of all active taxpayers on behalf of CGST.
