Businesses and services are now slowly recovering after a massive IT outage across the world affected computer systems on Friday. However, problems are still being faced in flight operations. Experts say that it may take some time for the computer system to recover completely.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz apologized for the trouble and said the company had fixed the issue, but warned that it could take “some time” for all systems to run normally. “CrowdStrike continues to work closely with all affected customers and partners to ensure that all systems are restored,” he said in a post on X.
95% of computers around the world running Microsoft OS came to a standstill.
Actually, this problem occurred due to a software update given to Microsoft Windows users by American anti-virus company CrowdStrike. Due to this, the screens of millions of systems around the world running on Microsoft operating system turned blue and the computers started starting automatically. All over the world, essential services like airports, flights, trains, hospitals, banks, restaurants, digital payments, stock exchanges, TV channels and supermarkets came to a halt.

4295 flights canceled worldwide
The biggest impact of the glitch on the Microsoft operating system was seen at the airport. 3% i.e. about 4,295 flights had to be canceled worldwide. In America alone, 1100 flights were canceled and 1700 were delayed. According to Indian time, its effect started appearing at 10:40 am on Friday. Huge crowd was seen at major airports of the country including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru. Due to halt of online services, flight boarding passes were given by hand at many airports.
Due to such widespread impact, it has become the biggest IT crisis in history. It is also being called ‘digital pandemic’. Microsoft had given this information around 5 am on Friday morning. However, Apple and Linux users were not affected by this.
After Microsoft’s technical problem, passengers were given handwritten boarding passes. An X user had shared its picture on the social media platform.
Microsoft’s role in airline and airport operations
- Airport Management System: Microsoft Azure and Dynamics 365 are used in airport management like passenger processing, baggage handling and facility management.
- Passenger Experience: With the help of Microsoft Azure and Power Apps, airports create mobile apps for passengers. This provides passengers with flight information, check-in and airport navigation.
- Security and Surveillance: Microsoft Azure and AI-powered cameras work for security monitoring and incident response.
- Data Analytics: Microsoft-powered BI and Azure provide insight into data on passenger traffic, flight delays, and operational performance.
