In men’s singles at the Paris Olympics, Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen will have to face world number 3 Jonathan Christie of Indonesia in the group match itself. Compared to Lakshya, the group of PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy is easier.
The Paris 2024 group stage draw was held at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday. Paris Olympics starts from 26th July. Whereas badminton competition will start from 27th July.
Goal is placed in Group L
Lakshya Sen, ranked 19th in the world ranking, has been placed in Group L. World number-3 Jonathan Christie is also in this group. Lakshya’s performance against them has not been very good. These two have clashed with each other five times so far. Have been successful in winning the target only once. Apart from Christie, the L group also has Kevin Corden (world ranking 41) and Julien Carraghy of Belgium (world ranking 52). If Prannoy and Lakshya top their group, they will face each other in the pre-quarterfinals.
On reaching the round of 16, Sindhu will have to face the two-time world champion.
Tokyo Olympics bronze and Rio Olympics silver medalist PV Sindhu has been given the 10th seed. They have been placed in Group M. Apart from Sindhu, she has been included in this group along with Kristin Kuuba of Estonia (world ranking 75) and Fatimath Nabaha of Maldives along with Abdul Razzaq (world ranking 111). Sindhu, who is preparing for her third medal in the Olympics, may have to face two-time world champion He Bingjao of the People’s Republic of China in the pre-quarterfinals. He may face current Olympic champion Chen Yufei in the quarterfinals.
Pranay got 13th priority
HS Prannoy, who is playing in the Olympics for the first time, has been seeded 13th. They have been placed in Group K. He has been included in this group along with Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat (world ranking 70) and Germany’s Fabian Roth (world ranking 82).
Tanisha-Ashwini’s path is also difficult
The Indian pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, ranked 19th in the world rankings, is facing a tough Group C in women’s doubles.
