Virat Kohli could not even touch the score of 5 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Australia’s legendary Matthew Hayden defended the opening of India’s Virat Kohli. He said that Virat is an experienced player, he is the best for the team in opening at this time. He may not have scored runs in New York, but he will score runs in West Indies.
Hayden answered this question in the Star Sports Press Room show for the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup. Along with him, Ian Bishop, Morne Morkel, Piyush Chawla and Krishnamachari Srikkanth also answered some important questions. Know what he said…
Virat failed in New York, will there be problems on West Indies pitch also?
Hayden said, ‘Virat Kohli is a world class player in any condition. There will be a need to play responsible innings in West Indies, here even a score of 160-170 will be very challenging. I think Virat is happy at the moment and is batting with a good mindset. Virat has also bounced back from very bad times before. So I don’t think it will be difficult for him to score runs in West Indies.
Should Virat go at number 3?
Hayden said- ‘Virat has scored a lot of runs while opening in the IPL and he can score runs in this position. I don’t think fielding Virat at number 3 would be a good decision. In T-20, the only job of an opener is to attack, Kohli can do this work. If he is failing while doing this then I don’t think there is anything wrong in it.
Even before this, Indian selectors had made Virat open in the T-20 series. He was preparing Kohli for this position. Therefore, he should no longer be judged by 3 poor performances on the New York pitch. He is an experienced player, will perform in the future matches.
On this question, Krishnamachari Srikkanth said, ‘Virat Kohli is a great batsman, his ability should not be doubted. He did not walk in New York, but should be left alone for the following matches. Kohli is a king and knows how to make a comeback.
Should Kuldeep Yadav get a chance?
Piyush Chawla said on this, ‘When Team India was selected, captain Rohit Sharma had said that he will tell in the West Indies itself why he is taking 4 spinners. He had taken this decision only after seeing the venue of Super-8 stage. The team has so far fielded 2 spin bowling all-rounders in the form of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja.
Now the time has come that Kuldeep should get a chance by replacing either Mohammad Siraj or Arshdeep Singh. Because now all the matches will be held in West Indies only. Kuldeep will prove to be India’s match winner on the slow pitches here.
Will there be high scoring matches in West Indies?
South African legend Morne Morkel said, ‘West Indies have turning pitches, here a score of 160 to 170 can be match winning. Most teams have at least two spinners, South Africa has also made excellent use of its two spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj. Therefore, there is little hope of getting high scoring matches in West Indies.
On this question, West Indies legend Ian Bishop said, ‘I don’t think it will be difficult to score 200+. 200+ score crossed twice in St. Lucia, there will be further matches here also. If not 200 then a score of 180 or 190 can be made, hence high scoring matches can be expected. There will be very interesting Super-8 matches especially in Barbados.
