India defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs in its first Super-8 match. With this victory, Team India is unbeaten in the ongoing T-20 World Cup, one match remained inconclusive due to rain.
Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first at the Kensington Oval Stadium in Bridgetown. With the help of Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty (53 runs), Team India scored 181 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs on a slow pitch and gave the target of 182 runs to the Afghan team.
In the run chase, the Afghan team was all out for 134 runs in 20 overs. Many moments and records were seen in this match. The Indian captain got a lease of life from DRS after which he was out in the same over. The shot which Kohli played against Pakistan’s Haris Rauf in the 2022 World Cup was called the shot of the century. Today he played the same shot against Afghan pacer Naveen. Rohit Sharma became the batsman who hit the most sixes as captain in the ICC tournament.
7 moments of IND Vs AFG…
1. Rohit survived in DRS, got out in the same over
Rohit Sharma played an innings of 8 runs on 13 balls.
Left arm pacer Fazal Haq Farooqui, who was bowling the third over of the Indian innings, gave the first blow to India. He got captain Rohit Sharma caught by Rashid Khan on the 5th ball of the third over. Rohit wanted to play a big shot with a straight bat on the fuller length ball, but was defeated by the pace. Fazal Haq bowled this ball at a speed of 119. The ball hit the bottom of the bat and went into the hands of Rashid Khan standing at mid-on. On the first ball of the same over, Fazal’s ball hit Rohit’s pad. Afghanistan took DRS and the third umpire gave not out.
2. Kohli’s flat six
Virat Kohli scored 24 runs on 24 balls.
Kohli hit a six like his shot of the century on Naveen’s ball. The way he had hit a six on Haris’ ball against Pakistan in 2022, in the same way Virat played a shot on Naveen’s ball today. In the 5th over, Virat Kohli hit a flat six on Naveen Ul Haq’s ball. On a slower ball of good length, Kohli played a shot over the bowler’s head with a straight bat.
3. Dubey out in DRS
Shivam Dubey was out after scoring 10 runs.
Rashid Khan shocked India in the third consecutive over. After Pant-Kohli, he showed Shivam Dubey the way to the pavilion. Rashid got Shivam Dubey out LBW on the 5th ball of the 11th over. He wanted to cut the ball coming in from the off stump, but the ball hit the pad. Rashid appealed, but the field umpire rejected the appeal, so the Afghan captain took DRS and the third umpire declared Dubey out.
4. Pant missed the catch from Naveen
Rishabh Pant scored 20 runs on 11 balls.
There was a chance of runout on the first ball of the last over of the powerplay, but the third umpire declared it a knockout. Kohli tried to score a run by flicking Nabi’s first ball, but the short fine leg fielder made a direct throw, but did not get the wicket. Here Rishabh Pant, who came on strike, hit three consecutive fours in Nabi’s over. The second four came due to a catch drop. Rishabh swept in the deep backward direction, but Naveen Ul Haq could not take the catch and the ball went outside the boundary line. After getting a lease of life, Rishabh scored another four.
5. Zadran missed the catch from super fit Kohli
Virat Kohli dropped the catch of Ibrahim Zadran
Virat Kohli missed the catch of Ibrahim Zadran in the third over. Zadran played a back of length ball outside the off stump with his backfoot. Which went to Virat Kohli standing at cover point, but Kohli could not catch the catch. 9 runs came from this over of Arshdeep and Afghanistan’s score became 23/1.
6. Team India came out wearing black bands, paid tribute to Johnson
