35-year-old Jay Shah was elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, August 27. Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave believes that Jay Shah’s broadcast deals and success in organizing big events were the reasons for his election as chairman unopposed.
Speaking to the media, Graves said, if you look at Jay’s leadership in BCCI, it has been fantastic. They have hosted the Women’s Premier League, successfully hosted the 50-over World Cup in India and have signed huge broadcast deals for the IPL and BCCI.
Jay Shah accepts the issues- Grave
He further said, Shah got the support of 15 out of 16 members in the nomination stage. This is the kind of support that even Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan or Shashank Manohar did not get at the ICC. From what I have read about Jay since taking charge, he seems to acknowledge the issues. This is a good sign for ICC.
Jay Shah will take over as ICC chairman on December 1
35-year-old Jay Shah was elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, August 27. No one had applied against Shah for this post. In such a situation, elections were not held and he was elected unopposed.
He will replace current chairman Greg Barclay. Jay will take over as chairman on December 1. He is currently the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Jay Shah will be the 5th Indian Chief of ICC
Before Shah, 4 Indians have held the post of ICC Chief. Jagmohan Dalmiya was the ICC chief from 1997 to 2000, Sharad Pawar from 2010 to 2012, N Srinivasan from 2014 to 2015 and Shashank Manohar from 2015 to 2020. Before 2015, the ICC Chief was called President. Now it came to be called Chairman.
Grave has been on this post since 2017.
Johnny Grave has been the CEO of Cricket West Indies since February 2017. He will step down as CEO at the end of October 2024. During his tenure, West Indies hosted the 2018 Women’s T-20 World Cup, 2022 Men’s Under-19 World Cup and 2024 Men’s T-20 World Cup.
