India has once again made it to the knockout stage of the ICC tournament. The team will play the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup against England on June 27. India is playing its 11th ICC tournament since 2013 and the team has made it to the knockout round for the 10th time. Despite consistently crossing the group stage, India has not been able to win a single ICC trophy since 2014.
No success in T-20 World Cup after 2007
India won its first T20 World Cup in 2007, the team won the trophy by defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final. After this the team played 7 more T-20 World Cups. The team reached the knockout stage i.e. semi-finals and finals thrice but did not win the title in even one.
In 2014, India defeated South Africa in the semi-finals, but lost the final to Sri Lanka. In 2016, India reached the knockouts on its own home ground, but lost the semi-finals to West Indies. In 2022, the team reached the knockout for the last time, but this time England defeated them by 10 wickets.
Meanwhile, in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2021 the team could not even cross the group stage. Now in the World Cup of this format, India has once again confirmed the semi-final ticket.
Yearning for success in ODI World Cup after 2011
India last won the ODI World Cup title in 2011. 28 years ago, in 1983, the team got its first success in the World Cup of this format. Then the team won the trophy by defeating West Indies and in 2011, Sri Lanka. Since then, India played 3 more ODI World Cups, each time the team reached the knockout stage, but could not win the title in even one.
In 2015, India defeated Bangladesh in the quarter-finals, but lost to home team Australia in the semi-finals. In 2019, New Zealand defeated India in the semi-finals. In 2023, India again settled the scores and defeated New Zealand in the semi-finals, but the team could not win against Australia in the finals.
The last Champions Trophy title was won in 2013.
India won its first title in the Champions Trophy in 2002, however, due to the final being inconclusive, the trophy had to be shared with Sri Lanka. After this, in 2013, the team defeated England in the final on its home ground and captured the trophy. This was India’s last ICC trophy in the last 11 years.
After 2013, the Champions Trophy tournament took place only once in 2017. India defeated Bangladesh in the semi-finals and entered the final for the second consecutive time. But had to face a big defeat of 180 runs against Pakistan. After this the Champions Trophy did not happen, now in 2025 the tournament will be held in Pakistan.
Lost both finals of the World Test Championship
ICC started the World Test Championship in the form of Test World Cup to make Test cricket interesting. In this, 9 teams play 6-6 bilateral series for 2 years. Here the final is held between the teams occupying top-2 positions in the points table.
The final of WTC i.e. World Test Championship has been held only twice till now in 2021 and 2023. India made it to the finals both times, but both times the team lost. In 2021, New Zealand was defeated by 8 wickets and in 2023, Australia was defeated by 209 runs.
Lost 10 tournaments in 10 years
After winning the last ICC trophy in 2013, India has participated 10 times in 4 ICC tournaments across all three formats till 2023. The team reached the knockout stage 9 times and was out of the group stage only once.
India played a total of 13 matches in 9 knockout stages. The team could lose in 9 and win only in 4. Of India’s 4 wins, 3 were in the semi-finals and one in the quarter-finals. During this period, India also lost 4 semi-finals and 5 finals. That means India lost its chance to become champion 5 times in the last 10 years by coming to the last stage.
Why couldn’t India win a single trophy in 10 years?
Reaching the knockout stage 10 times in 11 ICC tournaments, one thing is clear that the Indian team was strong. Every time the team was a contender to win the trophy, but did not get the trophy. There are two reasons why this happened, first is the fear of losing and second is the captaincy. Let us understand the reasons in detail…
1. What is the fear of losing or failing?
Fear of losing or fear of failure is a state in which people do not take any decision in which there is a possibility of defeat. They neither try new things nor want to take risks. There are 4 main reasons behind this…
According to sports psychologist Karanbir Singh and mental coach Prakash Rao, There is pressure in big matches. If players take the match as a challenge then the chances of positive results are higher. If he takes the match as a threat then it has a negative impact on the game. This had an impact on Team India in ICC tournaments for the last few years.
2. Captain Dhoni won the last 3 trophies
India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy title under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. He believes that in any match his focus is more on action and process than the result. That means they focus on what they can do and not on what the result will be. With this mindset, he won 3 ICC trophies for India.
Although, India also faced failures under Dhoni’s captaincy, but he is the only captain to win 3 different ICC trophies. After that, India played all the ICC tournaments under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but did not get success in any of them.
Mental coach Prakash Rao says- Due to pressure in big matches, players start focusing more on the result rather than the process. Due to which the brain cannot decide what to do now. This slows down the player’s movement. This has a negative impact on the outcome of the match. Choking can happen to anyone at any time. No matter how experienced the player is.
Choking has been happening continuously with Team India for the last 10 years. The team has now once again performed brilliantly in the group stage of the ICC tournament and reached the knockout stage. It will be important to see whether the team will repeat its past mistakes or overcome those mistakes and create history by winning the trophy.
