India has almost reached the semi-finals after winning the second match in the Super-8 of the T-20 World Cup. The match is being played between Australia and Afghanistan since this morning. If Afghanistan loses here, then Australia and India’s place in the semi-finals of Group 1 will be confirmed.
After this, 2 semi-final teams from Group 2 remain to be decided. These two teams will face India and Australia. India has won 2 matches, but the team still has to defeat Australia in the last match. There are two important conditions behind this, which we will understand later in the story…
India reached top in Group-1
Team India defeated Afghanistan and Bangladesh and secured the first position in the Group-1 points table of Super-8. The team has 4 points and the run rate is also 2.425.
Australia is at second place with 2 points, while Afghanistan has lost 1 and Bangladesh 2 matches. However, still neither any team from this group has confirmed a place in the semi-finals nor any team has been out of the race.
Why was India’s place not confirmed?
There are still two conditions coming in the way of India’s semi-final confirmation.
- Condition-1: Afghanistan should win the ongoing match between Afghanistan and Australia. In this condition, Afghanistan-Australia will have 2-2 points and both the teams will have 1-1 match left. By winning these, both the teams will reach 4-4 points equal to India. In this situation, only two teams with better run rates will get tickets for the semi-finals.
- Condition-2: After Afghanistan’s victory, India’s position will be stuck only if Team India loses the last match against Australia. If this happens then 3 teams will reach 4-4 points and the matter will be stuck on run rate only.
- To avoid these two conditions, India will have to defeat Australia in the last match. If this happens, India will enter the semi-finals by being first in Group-1.
India can reach the semi-finals today itself
India can confirm its place in the semi-finals today itself. For this Australia will have to win the match against Afghanistan. Due to this, the teams of Afghanistan and Bangladesh will lose 2-2 matches. This will be the last match of Super-8 between the two, whichever team wins this, will be able to reach a maximum of only 2 points. Whereas the teams of India and Australia will confirm their place in the semi-finals by securing 4 points each.
Still it is necessary to defeat Australia in the last match
Despite Afghanistan’s defeat, India will have to win the last match against Australia. So that Team India reached the semi-finals by being on top in Group-1 of Super-8. According to ICC, in a semi-final, the topper of Group 1 will face the second placed team of Group 2. In the second semi-final, the topper of Group-2 will face the second-ranked team in Group-1.
First of all, it is important to be on top in the group so that we can compete with the weak team of the other group i.e. the second placed team. The second reason for finishing on top in the group is ICC rules. ICC had already decided before the tournament that if the semi-finals were canceled due to rain, then the team at the top of the Super-8 points table i.e. at number one would be considered the winner.
70% chance of rain in India’s semi-finals
ICC has also decided that if India reaches the semi-finals, the match will be held in Guyana. This match will start on June 27 at 8 pm Indian time. No reserve day has been kept for this, because according to West Indies time the match will start at 10:30 am. Had a reserve day been kept in this, the team would not have got enough time before the final to be held on June 29.
However, if there is rain in India’s semi-final, then 250 minutes i.e. 4 hours, 10 minutes extra time will be available on the same day. In this, if even 10-10 overs play is not possible between the two teams, then the match will be cancelled. In this condition, the topper team of Super-8 group will play the final.
There are 70% chances of rain in Guyana on June 27, which means if India wants to strengthen its position in the semi-finals, then the team will have to win all three matches in Group-1 and finish on the top of the points table. If Team India reaches the last-4 by finishing second and the semi-finals are cancelled, then India will not be able to reach the finals either.

England will have to win by a big margin in Group-2.
Only 2 matches are left in Group-2, these will decide the 2 teams of the semi-finals. There will be a match between England and America from 8 pm tonight. The last match of the group will be played between West Indies and South Africa from 6 am tomorrow.
- America If they want to maintain their hopes of reaching the semi-finals then they will have to win today. The team has no points from 2 losses in 2 matches. By defeating England the team will gain 2 points. After this, they will also have to pray for West Indies to lose by a big margin in the last match. Only then will they have hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
- England India will also have to register victory against America by a big margin. The English team has 2 points in 2 matches and their run rate is 0.412. South Africa (0.625) and West Indies (1.814) have better run rates than England. If England wants to maintain its hopes of reaching the semi-finals, it will have to improve its run rate from South Africa. If this does not happen then the team will again have to wait for South Africa to lose by a big margin.
- west indies The last match will be against South Africa tomorrow morning. The team has 2 points in 2 matches and the run rate is the best among all the teams of Group-2. If the home team wants to reach the semi-finals, it will have to win the last match. Also, your run rate will have to be better than either South Africa or England team. The team’s run rate is currently better than both the teams, so their work can be done even by defeating South Africa.
- South Africa Has 4 points from 2 wins in 2 matches. If the team wants to make it to the semi-finals then it will have to pray for England’s defeat today. If this does not happen then they will have to defeat West Indies in the last match. Even if this does not happen, then they will have to keep their run rate better than either West Indies or England.
