India’s top gymnast Dipa Karmakar has made a big achievement in her name and has become the first player from the country to win a gold medal in the Asian Senior Championship in gymnastics. On Sunday, she won this medal in women’s vault. Dipa Karmakar’s average in the vault final was 13.566 on the last day of the final. This tournament was played in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
30-year-old Dipa Karmakar defeated North Korea’s Kim Son Hyang and Jo Kyung Byeol in the final. Hyang’s average score was 13.466 and Byeol’s score was 12.966. Both of them won silver and bronze medals respectively. Dipa, who finished fourth in the vault final at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, had earlier won a bronze medal in the same event in 2015. However, for the first time someone had won the gold medal.
Ashish Kumar earned a bronze medal in the individual floor exercise at the 2015 Asian Championships. Pranati Nayak also won bronze medals in the vault event in the 2019 and 2020 editions, but Dipa Karmakar not only changed the color of her medal, but also converted it directly into a gold medal. Sports Authority of India has also praised Dipa Karmakar and congratulated her. SAI tweeted, “History created at the Asian Gymnastic Championships. Inspirational, Dipa Karmakar! Congratulations on #Gold.”
Tripura’s gymnast also achieved a remarkable feat. Gold medal on vault at the 2018 FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkey, making her the first Indian to win a gold medal at a worldwide gymnastics competition. Dipa, who returned to competition this year after a 21-month suspension due to doping, is out of the race for the Paris Olympics. She finished 16th in the all-round category on Friday with a score of 46.166.
The Asian Championships was the final Olympic qualification round. She finished fourth in the vault final at the FIG Apparatus World Cup in Doha in April. After finishing fifth at the Cairo World Cup (15–18 February), she had previously missed the World Cup in Cottbus, Germany (22–25 February). This is the reason why she will not be able to play Paris Olympics.
