Dharambir won gold in club throw with Asian record, Pranab Surma won silver.


Indian performance in the Paris Paralympics got a boost when the athletes performed brilliantly and won both gold and silver in the club throw event. Not only this, Dharambir, who won the gold medal in this event, also broke the Asian record. In the men’s club throw F51 event, Dharambir broke the Asian record with a best throw of 34.92 meters in his fifth attempt. Surma made a throw of 34.59 meters in his first attempt, but could not perform better in subsequent attempts. In this way he won the silver medal. Serbia’s Filip Graovac won the bronze in his second attempt by throwing 34.18 meters.

Let us tell you, Dharambir’s mentor and 2017 World Championship silver medalist Amit Kumar Saroha was the third Indian to participate in this event. However, he finished last with a best effort of 23.96 metres.

With these two medals, India’s total medal tally in the Paris Paralympics has increased to 24. Dharambir has become the fifth Indian to win a gold medal at the Paris Paralympics, while Surma is India’s ninth silver medalist in Paris.

Asian record broken after four fouls

Talking about Dharambir’s performance, the 35-year-old athlete had fouled his first four throws in the final of the Paris Paralympic Club Throw. After this, in his fifth throw he not only achieved first place by covering a distance of 34.92 metres, but also managed to break the Asian record.

Dharambir had earlier participated in Rio and Tokyo Paralympics, but he could not win a medal.

Dharambir had won a silver medal at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in early 2022. For his outstanding performance in national and international competitions, Dharambir was awarded the Bhim Award, the highest sporting honor given by the Government of Haryana, in 2022.
