To prevent hoarding and keep the price stable, today i.e. on June 24, the Central Government has imposed stock holding limit on wheat. This limit will be applicable to traders/wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers and processors in all states and union territories. This order will remain in force till March 31, 2025 for all states and union territories.

Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that single retailers, big-chain retailers, processors and wholesalers will provide wheat stock information every Friday. Chopra said, “I want to remove the shortage of wheat in the country.” He also said that at present there is no ban on export of wheat and there is no proposal to review the ban on export of sugar.

The price of flour increased from Rs 34.29 to Rs 36.13.
Official data shows that wheat and flour prices have increased by Rs 2 per kg compared to last year. As of June 20, the average retail price of wheat was Rs 30.99 per kg, compared to Rs 28.95 a year ago. The prices of wheat flour have also increased to Rs 36.13 per kg as compared to Rs 34.29 per kg last year.

Stock limit for wholesalers 3,000 tonnes

  • Sanjeev Chopra said- The stock limit for wholesalers will be 3,000 tonnes, while for processors it will be 70% of the processing capacity.
  • For big chain retailers, it will be 10 tonnes per outlet, with a total limit of 3,000 tonnes. It will be 10 tonnes for single retailers.

Stock limit imposed in view of media reports
Chopra said the stock limit has been imposed in view of recent media reports. It was said that the prices of essential commodities including wheat were increasing. He said that the stock limit has been imposed to reduce hoarding.

Stock was 75 LMT on 1 April 2024
Chopra also informed that the opening stock of wheat on April 1, 2023 was 82 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), while on April 1, 2024 it was 75 LMT. He said last year 266 LMT was procured, whereas this year the government has procured 262 LMT and the procurement is still going on. Hence the shortage of wheat (in opening stock) is only 3 LMT.
