The deteriorating relations between India and Canada are also affecting the people of Indian origin settled in Canada. An Indian-origin man living in Canada recently faced the racist wrath of a local woman. This person named Ashwin Annamalai shared his experience of the incident through a post on social media.
Sharing the sequence of events that happened with her, Annamalai wrote that I had gone out for a walk in Waterloo, Ontario, when a woman there started pointing her finger at me and making racist comments. Thinking me to be an Indian, she started saying racist things continuously. Although I have been living here for 6 years and have also taken citizenship here.
Ashwin wrote that I tried my best to make her understand that I am not an Indian but a Canadian citizen but she did not agree. When I politely challenged her, she started shouting more loudly and using racist abuses. She was also troubled by the fact that there are black people in the Canadian community. She also kept accusing me of not speaking English. She kept telling me that you should leave Canada.
Annamalai also shared a video with the post in which the woman shouts loudly saying go back, go back to your place, you are not Canadian..
The woman said that I am being aggressive towards you because Indians have come and settled in Canada in large numbers and I want them to go back. He shouted that your parents were not from Canada, your grandparents were not from here so you should not live here.
Annamalai later asked the unnamed woman if she could speak French, another official language of Canada. However, she ignored this and kept saying in English to go back. Go back to India.
Annamalai wrote that this is not the first such incident. Such hate-filled encounters have been happening regularly since the beginning of the year, and people are becoming increasingly emboldened.
