Amit Rohidas banned- Indian hockey team vice-captain and defender Amit Rohidas was banned for one match after being shown a red card in the Paris Olympics 2024 quarter-final match against Great Britain on Sunday. This means that he will not be able to play the semi-final match against Germany on Tuesday. During the second quarter of the match against Great Britain, Rohidas was dribbling in midfield when his stick hit an opponent player and he was shown a red card by the on-field umpire.
After Amit was shown a red card, India had to play most of the match with just 10 players, however, after four quarters, India managed to keep the scoreline at 1-1 and on the basis of PR Sreejesh’s brilliant performance, India won the shootout. Won and made it to the semi-finals.
The official FIH statement read, “Amit Rohidas has been suspended for one match for breach of the FIH Code of Conduct, which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4. The suspension was imposed in Match No. 35 (Germany “Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of only 15 players.”
The on-field referee initially did not consider the incident a serious violation. However, after a video referral, the decision was overturned and Rohidas was given a red card.
Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh took revenge after a few minutes by scoring the first goal of the match, but his happiness did not last long because Lee Morton of Great Britain equalized the match by scoring a goal in reply. No more goals could be scored until the fourth quarter and the match went to a shootout.
Tokyo 2020 bronze medalists India will face Germany in the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic hockey tournament on Tuesday.
