Djokovic was the defending champion of the US Open. He won this tournament in 2023 by defeating Daniil Medvedev of Russia.

A day earlier on August 30, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who had won 15 Grand Slams, was eliminated from the second round by the 74th ranked player. Alcaraz won the US Open in 2022.
