The Prime Minister had released the 17th installment of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi on June 18. Then an installment of Rs 2,000 each was sent to the accounts of 9.26 crore farmers. This scheme was started in 2019 to provide financial assistance to farmers.

The government had increased the MSP of 14 Kharif crops in June.
The government had increased the MSP of 14 Kharif crops last month in June. The new MSP will put a burden of Rs 2 lakh crore on the government. This is Rs 35 thousand crore more than the previous crop season. The government believes that MSP should be at least 1.5 to 2 times the cost of the crop. MSP includes 24 crops.

Which crops are included in Kharif crops?
Paddy (rice), maize, jowar, bajra, mung, groundnut, sugarcane, soybean, urad, tur, horse gram, jute, flax, cotton etc. Kharif crops are sown in June-July. They are harvested in September-October.

What is MSP or Minimum Support Price?
MSP is the guaranteed price that farmers get on their crops, even if the price of that crop is low in the market. The logic behind this is that farmers should not be affected by fluctuations in crop prices in the market. They should continue to get the minimum price.

The government decides the MSP before every season on the recommendation of CACP i.e. Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices. If there is a bumper production of any crop, its market prices are low, then MSP acts as a fixed assured price for them.
