Gautam Gambhir has become the head coach of Team India. BCCI Secretary Jai Shah announced this on Tuesday. 42 year old Gambhir has replaced Rahul Dravid, popularly known as The Wall.

Dravid’s tenure ended after the T20 World Cup. Gambhir’s tenure will last till July 2027.

Gambhir had made Kolkata Knight Riders the champion of IPL-2024 one and a half months ago. He became the mentor of the Kolkata franchise this year. Not only this, under his mentorship Gambhir had taken Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs for two consecutive seasons.

Gambhir does not have coaching experience
Gambhir has no coaching experience at international or domestic level, he has been in charge of the coaching staff in 2 IPL franchises. He was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, while he joined KKR in the 2024 season. Gambhir took the team to the playoffs in the first two seasons of his stay at LSG. At the same time, KKR was made champion this season.

Gambhir won 2 World Cups and 2 IPL as a player
As a player, Gambhir was a part of India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2007 and ODI World Cup victory in 2011. He captained KKR for seven IPL seasons from 2011 to 2017, and they also qualified for the playoffs five times. As captain, he won two titles in 2012 and 2014.

Dravid became head coach in November 2021
Rahul Dravid was made the head coach of India in November 2021, when Team India was out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The team again played the semi-finals in the 2022 T-20 World Cup. Dravid’s tenure ended after the ODI World Cup in 2023, but due to Team India reaching the final, his tenure was extended till the T20 World Cup. Then Dravid made India the world champion in T-20. On June 29, India won the T-20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by 7 runs.

Under Dravid’s coaching, Team India has also won the Asia Cup in 2023. India won the title by defeating host Sri Lanka.
