After the end of the Sri Lanka Premier League, Sanath Jayasuriya will take over as the coach of the Sri Lankan team.
Sanath Jayasuriya will be the coach of the Sri Lankan team during the T20 and ODI series against India. He himself gave this information to news agency FP.
The post of head coach of the Sri Lankan team has been vacant since the departure of Chris Silver Wood. After Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup, head coach Chris Silverwood and consultant coach Mahela Jayawardene stepped down from their posts. Silverwood was the head coach of the Sri Lankan team from 2022.
While talking to the news agency on Monday, Jayasuriya said that he will replace Chris Silverwood. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board had offered him to coach the team in the home T20 and ODI series against India and then on Sri Lanka’s tour of England, which he has accepted.
Sri Lanka has to play three ODI and three T20 series at home against Team India.
Team India will tour Sri Lanka later this month. The Indian team has to play a series of three T20 matches from July 27 to August 7 and then a series of three ODI matches.
After that, Sri Lanka has to tour England at the end of August to play a three-Test series. The first Test is to be played from 21 to 25 August, while the second Test is to be played from 29 August to 2 September and the third Test is to be played from 6 to 9 September.
Sri Lanka was out in the first round of T-20 World Cup
The Sri Lankan team, captained by Wanindu Hasaranga, was eliminated from the first round of the T20 World Cup 2024. It lost to Bangladesh and South Africa.
Under the coaching of Silverwood, Sri Lanka won the T-20 Asia Cup in 2022.
Under Silverwood’s tenure as coach, Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and made it to the final of the 2023 ODI Asia Cup during his tenure. However, during this period, Sri Lanka has also performed disappointingly in the World Cup twice. They finished ninth in last year’s ODI World Cup and hence failed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The team was out of the current T-20 World Cup even before the first round.
Sanath Jayasuriya has played all three formats for Sri Lanka
Sanath Jayasuriya has played 586 matches for Sri Lanka in all three formats. He has 42 centuries and 440 wickets in his name. He played his last international match in 2011.
